The Calumet Double Porter Fume
Sampled June 2003, On Draft, Montreal, Canada

In an interesting collaboration between the popular French-Canadian beer website Bieropholie.com and Montreal craft brewer Brasserie le Chaudron, the Mondiale de la Biere festival recently offered me a chance to sample the Calumet Double Porter Fume. The Calumet is an intensely smoky beer, a distant and unknown relative to the simple flavors of Bamberg or even the more powerful American example of the Alaskan Smoked Porter. This beer personifies the extreme smoked beer, yet one that actually manages to pleasantly balance sharp, distinct charcoal flavors with a residual sweetness and a welcomed hop finish.
